SITE VISITS
On Day 2 (February 19) in the afternoon, three site visits will take place. They're yet another occasion to meet with actors involved in making in their architectural practice. Every participant is invited to choose one out of three visits. For obvious organizational reasons, the number of participants per visit is limited.
Visit #1: BC Materials
BC Materials is a cooperative started by the architecture firm BC architects & studies. They develop building materials (mixes for rammed earth, compressed-earth blocks, earth plasters), from local earth excavated from construction sites in Brussels, following a circular and ecological logic. The visit will take place in their production facility, which they designed and built. The materials they develop are meant to be sold to contractors and builders, but also to be used in the projects designed by BC architects & studies, who accumulated knowledge on these techniques. Visit #2: Design with Sense
Design with Sense gathers architects, craftsmen and designers. They question the usual division of the tasks and expertise on a project, by integrating design and construction. Their projects, ranging from the scale of the furniture to that of interior design, bear witness to their reflexions to materials, with a particular interest for reused materials. The visit will start from their shop and continue with two projects they designed and built, both situated in Saint Gilles: the flemish library and the CPAS. Visit #3: Fablab ULB et Collectif Dallas
The visit will start at Fablab ULB, to see their tools for digital fabrication and the projects of the Digital Fabrication Studio that gather students from various discipllines, among which architecture. On the same site, the visit will continue with Collectif Dallas, a group of young architects who develop a practice allying design and construction, with a participatory approach to building and a taste for craftsmanship. They will show their studio, which they recently renovated with their own hands and tools, but also their project Velodroom, a temporary structure they built and designed in collaboration with the artists Bruno Herzele and Elke Thuy.
